Uxbridge on the outer limits of London’s tube network would a few years ago have been known simply for being at the western end of the Piccadilly and Metropolitan lines. That is not to say it has not had pretensions to grandeur: the awning of a furniture shop in the town centre proudly declares, ‘London, New York, Paris, Uxbridge’.
